Zespół powstał w 1982 roku w Nowym Jorku (Nowy Jork, USA).

Członkami zespołu przez okres twórczości byli Michael Gira, Jarboe, Norman Westberg, Algis Kizys, Harry Crosby, Roli Mosimann, Ted Parsons, Clinton Steele, Jenny Wade, Vincent Signorelli, Bill Rieflin, Larry Mullins i Christoph Hahn.
