Zginął w katastrofie lotniczej, gdy jego eksperymentalny samolot Rutan Long-EZ wpadł do Pacyfiku niedaleko Pacific Grove (Kalifornia, USA).

Odrzucił główną rolę w filmie "Oficer i dżentelmen", ponieważ nie spodobał mu się scenariusz. Ostatecznie angaż otrzymał Richard Gere.
